Let us start today with going back in history. Once upon a time… Well.., not that long, we will cut it short! Have you ever thought of the names for the bed sizes? We bet that if someone is asked to give ideas on the etymology of the names for King and Queen beds they will likely say that bigger beds were for the Kings and smaller for the Queens to sleep in. Not that easy! So, few lines from history for you.
The first bed, familiar to the one we sleep in, appeared during the times of Roman Empire. Before those times, beds were constructed of straw, leaves or animal skins spread on the ground. Further beds were becoming bigger and more decorated during the times of Renaissance and Louis XIV. But Kings & Queens used to sleep in smaller beds than we do now, because the smaller the bed – the easier it is to preserve body heat. Don’t forget, they used to have the fireplace only to keep them warm. Even in 1940s Americans used to sleep on twin or double beds, just before the mattress industry introduced the names for the bigger mattresses bringing more comfort to sleeping experience – and here it comes with the names for the beds accordingly!
Speaking of queen-size beds, we have to confess that size is not the only one thing you have to know about this type of bed. And we are here to give you a short guidance on the subject:
Dimension: Standard Queen beds are 80 inches long by 60 inches wide. Which is exactly the size of the beds introduced by Simmons Company in 1958, calling it in press a bed that “fits for queens”.
Other sizes of Queen beds: Yes, they do come in few more sizes!
- California Queen or often called the Queen XL or extra long – comes with 4 inches extra to the length instead of the standard 80 inches.
- Olympic Queen, also known as expanded queen, is 6 inches wider, with the final dimensions of 66×80.
- Split Queen has the same dimensions as the standard one, but the mattress is split into two separate ones, each 30×80. Also named super queen.
Mattresses depth varies from 9 to 16+ inches, so you have to keep it in mind when choosing the right bed and the good mattress to fit. Sometimes manufacturers offer pockets that are 22 inches deep, making it easy to keep sheets in place.
By the way, speaking of the sheets! Most queen sheet sets come for the standard queen-size beds, and no more than 15 inches deep, you may face difficulties when finding the right size bed sheets for Olympic and California Queens. But, no worries, if you are looking for it, you will definitely find the correct size, as there are even some companies that manufacture queen-sheets with deep pockets for the mattresses up to 22 inches.

Rules and Regulations
What color is typically glam? Typical glamorous tones are white, black, gray, jewel, cream, silver/gold tones, brushed platinum and all that matches the frames
What kind of accents can be used to complete the style? We recommend to use the light-catching materials like mirrors, metallic, crystals and lacquer to add shimmer to your glam. Do not forget about the chandeliers, scones and signature table lamps in style as accents.
What furniture and shapes belong to the glam design? Upholstery, metal, sculptural lines, old Hollywood era and Art Deco style, with special attention to details and iconic elements; elegance, mirrored and metallic décor, geometric shapes and patterns are in trend nowadays for glam.
Mirrors are the heart of the glam! Don’t be afraid to pick them in the furniture design, but yet be careful not to overwhelm, because too many in one spot can make the whole look inelegant. Use metallic as much as you can though! With more metallic you can’t spoil a good glam! Place mirrored and metallic elements in a spot where the lights are reflected to give the place its brilliant glory.
